Registration for Spring Swim School Begins

Please read the descriptions of each level before registering your child for swim school. Students must pass all skills in a given level before advancing to the next level. 

Parent/Child Aquatics:  This course aims to build basic water safety skills for both parents and children, helping young children become comfortable in the water so they are willing and ready to learn to swim. This course will help children learn to adjust to the water environment, showing comfort while maintaining a front or back position in the water and demonstrating breath control, including blowing bubbles or voluntarily submerging under water. Children must be at least 3 years of age and out of diapers.

Preschool: This is the entry level for most children 3-5 years of age. This course will provide young children with a positive and
developmentally appropriate aquatic learning experience that emphasizes water safety, survival and foundational swimming concepts.
Skills that will be taught in this course are:

• Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side
• Blowing bubbles through mouth and nose
• Submerging mouth, nose and eyes
• Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
• Front glide and recover to a vertical position
• Back float and recover to a vertical position
• Back glide
• Roll from front to back and back to front
• Treading with arm and hand actions
• Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back
• Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back
• Combined arm and leg actions on front and back

SKILLS REQUIRED TO PASS LEVELS 1-6 

Level 1: This is the entry level class for most children 6 years of age and older. This course will provide a positive and developmentally
appropriate aquatic learning experience that emphasizes water safety, survival and foundational swimming concepts.
Skills that will be taught in this course are:

• Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side
• Blow bubbles through mouth and nose
• Bobbing
• Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
• Front and back glides and back float
• Recover to vertical position from a front glide and back float or glide
• Roll from front to back and back to front
• Tread water using arm and hand actions
• Alternating and simultaneous leg actions on front and back
• Alternating and simultaneous arm actions on front and back
• Combined arm and leg actions on front and back

Level 2:  Children who have completed the skills listed for Level 1 are ready for Level 2.
Skills that will be taught in this course are:

• Enter water by stepping or jumping from the side
• Exit water using ladder, steps or side
• Fully submerge and hold breath
• Bobbing
• Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
• Front, jellyfish and tuck floats
• Front and back glides and back float
• Recover from a front and back float or glide to a vertical position
• Roll from front to back and back to front
• Change direction of travel while swimming on front or back
• Tread water using arm and leg actions
• Combined arm and leg actions on front and back
• Finning arm action on back
• Staying safe around aquatic environments

Level 3:  Children who have completed the skills listed for Level 2 are ready for Level 3.
Skills that will be taught in this course are:

• Enter water by jumping from the side

• Bobbing while moving toward safety

• Rotary breathing

• Survival float

• Back float

• Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and back

• Tread water

• Push off in a streamlined position then begin flutter and dolphin kicks on front

• Front crawl and elementary backstroke 15 yards each

• Scissors kick 10 yards

Level 4:  Children who have completed the skills listed for Level 3 are ready for Level 4.
Skills that will be taught in this course are:
• Swim under water
• Feet first surface dive
• Survival swimming
• Front crawl and backstroke open turns
• Tread water using 2 different kicks

• Front(25 yds)and back crawl (15 yds), elementary backstroke (25 yds), breaststroke (15 yds), sidestroke (15 yds) and butterfly (yds)
• Push off in a streamlined position then begin flutter and dolphin kicks on back

Level 5:  Children who have completed the skills listed for Level 4 are ready for Level 5.
Skills that will be taught in this course are:
• Tuck and pike surface dives
• Front flip turn and backstroke flip turn while swimming
• Tread water 2 minutes
• Front (50 yds)and back crawl (25 yds), elementary backstroke (50 yds), breaststroke (25 yds), sidestroke (25 yds) and butterfly (25 yds)
• Standard scull 30 seconds

Level 6:  Children who have completed the skills listed for Level 5 are ready for Level 6.
Skills that will be taught in this course are:

_ Front crawl, 100 yards
_ Elementary backstroke 100 yards, Back crawl 50 yards
_ Breaststroke 50 yards, Sidestroke 50 yards, Butterfly 50 yards
_ Front crawl open turn while swimming
_ Backstroke open turn while swimming
_ Front flip turn while swimming
_ Backstroke flip turn while swimming
_ Sidestroke turn while swimming
_ Butterfly turn while swimming
_ Breaststroke turn while swimming
_ Circle swimming
_ Using a pace clock
_ Using a pull buoy while swimming 25 yards
_ Using fins while swimming 25 yards
_ Using paddles while swimming 25 yards
_ Describe the principles of setting up an exercise program
_ Demonstrate various training techniques
_ Calculate target heart rate
_ Aquatic exercise

Exit Skill Assessment
_ Swim 500 yards continuously using any 3 strokes of yourchoice, swimming at least 50 yards of each stroke.
_ Perform the Cooper 12-minute swim test, and compare results with the preassessment results.
